Did you know that the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority gives approximately 3,500 rides every school day to Des Moines Public School students? DART is updating the region’s master plan for public transit, and would like the input of students and parents to make sure that the plan meets the region’s future needs. The Des Moines and Waukee school districts united with Drake University to host of a first-of-its-kind leadership academy, teaching students from the city and the suburbs what unites them, and how they can work together to reach their own goals, improve their schools and the lives of people in the community. Actor Kal Penn made his third trip back to Harding Middle School this week (pictured at left with the Harding Breakerz, a school dance group) as part of the school’s participation in Turnaround Arts. From students learning about homeostasis by getting out from behind their desks to a regular “brain dance,” Penn saw how the arts have been integrated to support all areas of learning.
